Businesses don't have the money for new lights

I'm reading about the professor who is going to save the world by making businesses change their lighting to be less intrusive (The Maui News, Nov. 3). There are already very strong sign regulations in place. As a Kihei businessman who had to get the approvals, I can attest to that.

Those businesses are not on residential streets. They need those lights to help make their business a success and also to discourage break-ins. The police chief is right on the money when he said we need highways lit to save lives.

Of course, the county can afford to install and maintain the shields they talk about. It has plenty of money, but we in business don't.
